Weekly Wrap

Upcoming Dates

Year 7, 2023 Orientation Day Tuesday 13th December

Dear all,

Welcome to the final Weekly Wrap for the year.

Across the last weekend, our Robotics Team travelled to Sydney to compete in the National Robotics Championships. They had been working every day to build and refine their robot, to give it the best chance of success. We had a scare with our robot on Friday afternoon, when we were informed it was not meeting the specifications of the tournament. This saw the teamwork through the night, rostering sleep across each team member to make the required modifications. This team demonstrated excellent qualities of resilience, teamwork and persistence, to get the job done and turn up with a tournament ready and compliant robot on Saturday. We are thrilled to announce that not only did our team exhibit the types of behaviours we believe we teach our students, but they made their way into the semi-finals. I would like to thank Declan Hutchings and Natasha Sutherland for their efforts to support the team in Sydney, and to the family members who also made the trek up the highway in support of our students. They did our College and themselves proud, and I hope they have inspired the next generation of robot builders to do likewise next year.

We also held the Parents Association second hand book and uniform sale. The event was very well attended, and many items were sold and purchased. The event is an opportunity for parents to raise money for second hand items and reduce the need to purchase items new. With cost-of-living pressures and a need to reduce our footprint from an environmental perspective, this is a very worthwhile event. A small fee is provided to the Parents Association to sell your items, which in turn gets returned to the student body, as the PA donate funds for student centred activities and resources. I would encourage parents who have an interest in volunteering to consider joining the group. As I often say, “it takes a village to raise a child, and the PA are a really important part of our “village.” I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their contributions across the year. As always, they have been very active and enthusiastic in support of our community.

The week concluded with our Student Leadership Camp at Merricks. Our leaders participated in activities designed to grow their understanding of our Parliament system, their leadership skills and to develop their action plans for the 2023 year. We are excited to see what their plans are and how they will go about enacting them as they strive to lead their community.

On Tuesday night this week, we held our annual Presentation Night.

The music was outstanding. We were treated to some excellent musical items, and the team are to be congratulated on the level of excellence they demonstrated.

It was a great honour to have the winner of the Glen Waverly District State parliament seat, John Mullahy attend Presentation Night. We have established a very strong relationship with John since meeting him earlier this year. In that short time, he has shown a keen interest in the College, its needs, and aspirations and most importantly, its community. Leading into the election we worked a lot with John, as he worked hard with us to gain a sense of what he could do for our community. At the year 12 final assembly I challenged him to do better than his two predecessors who had secured significant funding to enhance our College. John secured us 10.9 million dollars and we will put that towards an extensive renovation of our science and IT spaces, as well as our food technology classroom and an upgrade to our canteen.

I would like to close out the year by thanking you all for your support across the year. To our parents, thanks for taking this journey with us. We are so great full for your support. To our students, you have worked hard, now it is time to rest and recover. Next year we are going to aim even higher.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and festive season. I am excited to see you all again in 2023 ready for an even better year again,

We are very proud of the wonderful cohort of students who achieved excellence across the College year. Below is a list of the students who won awards.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION NEWS

It’s been a busy time for the production staff as the first round of auditions and call backs for our 2023 Production Spamalot have now taken place. For those not familiar with the show, it’s a combination of Monty Python’s films the Holy Grail and The Life of Brian. It has various famous sketches with the added lunacy of a musical score. It is lighthearted, and silly and we cannot wait to show you.

No need for FOMO though as we will be looking for more Knights of the Round Table, Laker Girls, dancing nuns, minstrels and horses and will therefore, hold a second round of auditions early in Term 1 of 2023. This will allow for new students and anyone who has yet to try out come and show off their skills and join the court at Camelot.

The show dates have changed from previous years and will now be presented in Term 3 Week 10 on the 12th, 14th and 15th of September 2023.

Dates and further information about the auditions will be posted on compass in the new year – be sure to keep an eye out. Oh, and if you find the Holy Grail before we do… please let us know.
