Student Free Day Friday 18th November

Presentation Night Tuesday 6th December

Year 7, 2023 Orientation Day Tuesday 13th December

Dear all,

Welcome to week 6

This week saw works around the College continue. Following site meetings, we expect work on the shade sail installation and gym/ theatre footing maintenance as well as Year 8/9 Locker Bays to commence in the next week. Along with the Pipeline works and our footpath construction, there is a lot of activity around the College.

We have trimmed the plants along the current Mahoneys Road footpath to allow greater pedestrian access, I ask that we all take a little extra care as we move around these areas. Every effort has been made to ensure safe passage, including the addition of witch’s hats inside the car park from 3pm, in order to restrict car traffic.

Today we marked Remembrance Day with the ceremonial planting of an additional rosemary plant under our Cypress Pine. Class commemorations held rather than a large assembly, as we are still conducting VCAA exams.

Thank you to Jim Marshall, Blackburn RSL for providing the College with a book to add to our library, The Digger of Kokoda, a moving account by Reg Chard, one of the last surviving diggers of Kokoda.  Jim also provided us, with a rosemary plant to add to our garden around the base of our Lone Pine. Forest Hill College is proud to have a Lone Pine tree, a direct descendant from the lands of Gallipoli. It is one of few left in Australia, and this one was transported from Nunawading High School, to our site during the merger with Nunawading High School in the late 1980’s.

You may have seen our social media post earlier this week promoting our wonderful Instrumental Music Program. I am excited to announce that for 2023, Alwaynne Strentz has taken over leadership of the program. For all Year 7 students, Instrumental Music lessons are free. We believe very strongly in the importance of learning an instrument, and accordingly, are very keen to promote and build this program. I would encourage all parents to chat with their children about the positive benefits of learning a musical instrument to enhance their academic growth, and of course, connections with their peers.

Congratulations Jasper

Jasper McMahon was selected in the SSV U15 Touch Football Team to attend the National Championships in Wagga Wagga in October. This is a significant achievement for Jasper after a lengthy training and selection process. Jasper was part of the leadership group and represented the team, our school and his state with pride.  We have been told that upon sustaining an injury, and being unable to play, Jasper was a keen supporter of his team mates in the sub box, providing positive affirmation and encouragement. These are excellent traits and signs of great leadership. Ultimately, Jasper ended up winning the MVP award for his work and leadership both on and off the field. We are very proud of Jasper.

Year 7 student and Soccer Academy participant, Thea Kotsandis has made the National Training Centre (NTC)  squad for season 2023. The NTC for girls is a key pillar of the Football Federation Australia’s development model for players. The NTC is a football training program, with the main purpose of preparing players who show potential talent to progress through the FFA development model to achieve Senior National Premier League Womens, W-League and international representation.

Also in Year 7 Soccer Academy, Noah Nheu, has been invited to play in the ASEANA CUP representing Melbourne Victory FC in Indonesia later this month. Both Thea and Noah are widely considered as having excellent prospects in the sport from a national talent perspective. Importantly, both students have outstanding Grade Point Averages, working diligently in class. We are very proud of them.

Have a great weekend,

Dave Rogers
