Welcome to week 8

Own your own story.

While this week again has been very busy, with our students participating in many things, I really wanted to focus on our core business in the wrap. The FHC Course Expo will take place early Term 3, and this is a really important part of every student’s education at FHC.

The College Vision Statement is, “to inspire passionate, positive and curious learners”, and the ability to select your own course from Year 9 is a key pillar in achieving that vision. Firstly, can I implore upon every parent and guardian to attend the Expo with your child, and take full advantage of the course selection interviews with our expert course counselling team.

Secondly, can I urge you all to commence conversations with those in your house about aspiration and career development. The choice and ownership of that is a key part of ensuring high level engagement in future studies. At FHC, students can select to participate in the full breadth of curriculum from Year 9, or, specialise in the subjects they are most passionate about. We want to enable our students to “own their own story”, to be the authors of their journey. Course Expo is a vital information session for all children, their parents, and their guardians.

The College is proud to have partnerships with universities. We have pathways into the Bachelor of Allied Health at Swinburne via Sport and Recreation VET at the College. We can also announce for high ability students an opportunity to participate in early start University pathways that deliver first year University credits and enhance ATAR scores. We are currently negotiating with Deakin University, so any member of our Performing Arts Academy has a guaranteed pathway into a Bachelor course at Deakin. Unlike the majority of secondary schools in Whitehorse, FHC has a proud and vibrant VCAL or Vocational Major program.

Students have a wide diversity of choice, and this can present as overwhelming, initially. The Course Expo will explain terms such as VET, VCE, and Vocational Major etc and assist everyone make informed choices. We are proud of our pathways and our partnerships, and we want to assist you work with us and your child through this exciting period of their lives. As the old proverb says, it takes a village to raise a child.

Year 8 Humanities Livability Field Trip

Students studying year 8 Humanities became geographers in the field as they explored Strathdon House and Orchard Precinct as part of a field trip and study of livability. Students busily collected primary and secondary data taking photos, interviewing and sketching their observations exploring factors that impact livability and accessibility as they walked to the precinct and explored how the needs of diverse groups of people can access and use this wonderful space.

Students took on the role of an urban planner hired by Whitehorse City Council to evaluate how successfully Strathdon House and Orchard precinct is able to enhance the livability of the area for residents, workers and visitors to the precinct by writing a field report using their data. We would like to thank the team at Whithorse City Council; Jo, Lisa and Tanveer who are passionate about sharing this this new exciting precinct and we hope to be able to visit again in the future.
