Proposed New Curriculum Structure

At College Council this week we had a proposal for a new curriculum structure presented. We have been looking to implement a timetable structure that best meets the needs of our students, and had been feeling the 4 period day was not as effective as it could be. We were keen to provide a structure where students could complete more subjects that they were passionate about.

Across 2021 and 2022 a working party of staff volunteers and key Leading Teachers researched and sought feedback from the school community on the current timetable structure. From this information, the team collaborated on a new timetable structure that represents the interests of students, teachers, and specific curriculum requirements.

The proposal presented was that we consider moving to a 5 period day, constructed of 60, as opposed to 70 minute classes. Only minor changes to bell times at the start and end of the day are being considered. Connect would be held for 1 60 minute session per week. The proposal continued the full suite of subject choice from Year 9, adding some more elective rotations across Year 7 and 8. STEAM and Barak was proposed to be delivered at 2 periods per week. The proposal ensures all students can access an early start VCE program, also allowing students to complete 6 Year 12 Units as part of their VCE if desired. Access to Academy is guaranteed through to and including Year 12, whilst also enabling Academy participants access to 5 or 6 Year 12 Units

We are interested in feedback, prior to making any decisions. If you have any thoughts on what is documented here, please feel free to email me on d.rogers@fhc.vic.edu.au

College Council

Any parents interested in nominating for Council can access the nomination forms from Compass. Nominations open today and close at 4pm next Friday 4 March. The work of Council is linked to governance, and key to ensuring our College thrives. If any parents or students want more information about the nature of the work, I encourage you to send me an email. The Council meetings for the 2022 year are held at 6:30pm on the following dates, 30/3, 25/5, 27/7,31/8, 26/10, 30/11, 7/12.

Bunnings BBQ

A big thank you and congratulations to our Parents Association, friends and staff who held our fundraising BBQ at Bunnings Vermont South last Sunday, raising $1700 for FHC.

We appreciate the time you took out of your weekend to help out our great school.

Swimming Carnival

The College Swimming Carnival that we postponed, will be held at some stage this year. Listening to many students their voice is very clear. They want the event, so we will run it. I am currently working with our team and the Pool to identify the most appropriate date for the rescheduled carnival. I appreciate every one’s support and understanding as we have made the decision to not hold it this term.

The College “Stand Out” group met yesterday to commence planning events for the year. We look forward to joining them in these events as they are announced. Senior Tennis, Cricket and Volleyball was held this week. We had a large number of participants in our first sport round robin for the year. On Friday our annual “Photo Day” was held. These images are used for Compass and for anyone who missed this day, a catch up session is being held on Wednesday 2 March.

Changes to Covid Rules

Lastly, rules on the wearing of masks change at midnight tonight. Masks are not required in Secondary schools as of then. Anyone who wishes to wear a mask is of course veery welcome to do so.
