Indoor Rowing Championships – School Sport Victoria

On Friday 11th October, a small contingent of Forest Hill College students made the trip to Melbourne Girls College, in Richmond, for the 2019 School Sport Victoria Indoor Rowing Championships. The event was hosted by School Sport Victoria in conjunction with Rowing Victoria with special guest and dual Olympian Josh Dunkley-Smith, who also holds the world record over 2000m for indoor rowing, also in attendance.

Students from across Victoria competed against each other in 500m, 1000m, 2000m and 4x500m relay events. Our Forest Hill College representatives all of who were new to this event gave it their absolute best efforts often against much more experienced competitors.

For those who have not heard about indoor rowing competitions before, here is a quick explanation. Imagine a double basketball court setting with 20-25 “concept 2” rowing machines all connected by network cabling that sent individual athlete information to a projector screen which shows a visual representation of an outdoor rowing race. A quick trip to google images might paint a better picture. Needless to say, the atmosphere during races was electric.

From a results standpoint, our Forest Hill competitors walked away with some reward for their efforts. Most notably;

Year 8 Boys

  • Caeden Roberts – 3rd in 500m & 1000m
  • Caeden Roberts, Nicholas Bould, Jarrah Dunstan, James Thorburn – 1st in 4 x 500m Relay

Year 9 Boys

  • Alex Reid – 1st in 500m & 1000m

Year 12 Boys

  • Josh Elford – 3rd in 1000m & 2000m

Well done to all who participated, you represented the college and yourselves exceptionally and gave it your best efforts.

Year 12 students Jackson Tinker and Noah Tarenidis competed in the Bill Keir Memorial Weightlifting event on Saturday 12th October. Both students have been training hard and committed to attending an ‘out of school’ competition, this alone should be commended. Both completed successful lifts of the Snatch and Clean and Jerk with Jackson recording a personal best results of:
