Welcome to edition 3 of Term 3

Phew what a term!

Forest Hill College has had some very exciting moments in the last 10 weeks and I’d like to take this opportunity to share of few of those:

We received a wonderful thank you from Blackburn Lake: Thank you once again for all your magnificent efforts planning and delivering engaging lessons to extend our high ability students. It was fantastic to observe how engaged all our students were in your lessons, and I know that they gained a lot of knowledge, confidence, collaborative skills, and development in their ability to problem solve.

Our future VCE students participated in our VCE information evening and made choices as to their future goals and aspirations. Whilst our current Year 12 English students had an excellent presentation from Ticking Minds to help further embed their understanding of the multimodal text High Ground by Stephen Johnson. Incursions such as these are invaluable as they allow students to hear from different voices and perspective, giving them greater depth to their written responses in the exam.

Each week our Year 9s have participated in the Girlosophy and Cool Guys program This program is designed to build capacity, resilience, self-esteem and positive relationships in youth.

Our student parliamentarians organised a highly successful Appreciation Week, demonstrating gratitude and highlighting community in areas such as The Self, The Arts, Teacher Appreciation, Environment and Culture.

Our performing arts and music teams had a very busy term with our Evening Soiree and our production of Legally Blonde. A great production directed by Chris Revell & his team, with the introduction of Toffee in a starring role. Thank you to Paula York for allowing Toffee and understudy Cupcake to stay up late on 2 nights to perform!

Term 4 has many exciting moments planned including:

The Year 12 final assembly and Valedictory. I thoroughly recommend parents attend the final assembly, its wonderful to see our young people celebrate their last official day of high school education, it’s also a very emotional moment for all of us.

We have been asked by several schools to provide PL to their staff on our improved Naplan results, so will be holding our inaugural Naplan Improvement Conference for teachers from other schools in Term 4.

We are working closely with Burwood Heights Primary school in Term 4 to facilitate their first forays into the Maths Olympiad.  We are also continuing our work in literacy and numeracy enrichment with both Blackburn Lake and Orchard Grove Primary Schools, this time in Grade 4, so if you have younger children at these schools look out for our staff.

Term 4 is when we run our whole school exam period, an opportunity for all students to demonstrate the extent of their learning over the past 12 months. The data from these exams helps inform later data conversations around potential courses and pathways of passion. So when the time comes please encourage your child to try their absolute best.

We have regional athletics taking place in Week 1, our Year 11 formal in Week 6 and our student leadership camp in Week 9. We also have the New Parent Information Evening, and finally our Presentation Night on Thursday 12th December to round out a very busy year.

Most excitingly, we also have the commencement of 2025 academic year. We hope to inform students of their classes for next year in Week 3 or 4 of term 4.

Thank you to all the staff for their continued dedication to learning at Forest Hill College. Their hard work enables our students to flourish and I’m sure you will join me in expressing gratitude to them.

I’d also like to thank our parents and students for their continued support of our College over the past Term.

Our school continues to go from strength to strength and I am very proud of the development of all staff and students, I wish everyone a wonderful holiday and look forward to an exciting and busy Term 4.

Bring it on!

2024 Spring Music Concert – Tuesday September 3rd

We wish to express our sincere thanks and gratitude for joining us in celebrating our talented music students at the Spring Music Concert.
It was an incredible showcase of our music department, and we truly appreciate your support and enthusiastic participation.
We couldn’t have done it without the commitment and dedication of our students, performers, and teachers.
Their hard work ensured that everything ran smoothly and that the audience had a memorable experience.
We look forward to seeing you at our future musical events.

2024 School Production : Legally Blonde the Musical – Thursday September 12th & Friday September 13th

The school’s production of Legally Blonde was performed on Thursday September 12th and Friday September 13th, with audiences of over 170 people each night.

It was incredible to have such a positive turnout in support of our performing arts program.

I’m sure all those in the audience agree that it was a highly entertaining evening.

This production saw students across different year levels working together to create a fantastic performance for all to enjoy.

Student Achievement : Rachel Nash – Principal Dancer State Schools Spectacular September 14th

Congratulations to Rachel Nash in Year 12 who featured as a Principal Dancer in the State Schools Spectacular on September 14th.

Maths Olympiad 2024

On September 4th, our Maths Olympiad students completed the final contest for 2024.

It has been another successful year for the program.

The number of students participated this year nearly doubled compared with last year.

I am thrilled to see everyone’s growth through the journey.

I hope that everyone has enjoyed the smiling face fruit plate, as well as all the coaching sessions and contests that we had this year.

As the Maths Olympiad program is for students up to Year 8, I would like to farewell our Year 8 Maths Olympiad students and wish them all the best for their future journey.

For the current Year 7 Maths Olympiad students, I would like to encourage everyone to continue with the program for another year.

If any other Year 7 students would like to join the program, please email your expression of interest to x.chen@fhc.vic.edu.au.

Insight Creative Writing Competition

Entries for the Insight Creative Writing Competition closed, but not before several of our students submitted their stories.

From the confetti of belongings washed up on a beach, to fighter jets protecting enemy lines, we are so proud of all of you who bravely entered the competition.

The annual Insight Creative Writing Competition comes with generous prize money for the top 3 stories in each year level, as well as the special Iris Breuer Writing Award which celebrates young people’s passion for engaging with literature.

Congratulations to all students who submitted writing pieces!

Whether you take out the prize money or not, entering the competition is a great step in your journey to creative story telling.

Sporting Updates

Table Tennis

The Year 8 Boys Table Tennis teams represented Forest Hill with great pride and skill at this year’s tournament.

Our Forest Hill A team showcased remarkable talent and determination, finishing at the top of their pool.
Despite their excellent performance, they narrowly lost the grand final in a count back situation.
Forest Hill had accumulated twelve more total points, but Templestowe College clinched victory by winning one more set.
Congratulations to Justin K, Lucas G, Cooper W, and Bastion B for their outstanding efforts throughout the competition.
A special shout-out to Justin K, who played in the number 1 position all day and remained unbeaten!
Our Forest Hill B team also demonstrated admirable sportsmanship and persistence.
Although the competition proved to be particularly challenging, the team showed tremendous effort and dedication.
Kudos to Owen S, Lachlan S, Infinity Z, Campbell G, and Jason J for their hard work and sportsmanship.
Overall, both teams represented Forest Hill with great enthusiasm and skill.
Well done to all players for their commendable performances and team spirit!

Basketball

The Year 8 Basketball teams also participated in our division round just falling short in the finals.
The boys’ team had a nail-biting last game with Cooper C hitting a buzzer beater to draw the game!
Our girls showed elevated levels of engagement and sportsmanship throughout the day, and it was great to see them improve each game.
The Year 7 boys will now be participating against other schools, we wish them the best!

Athletics

Our FHC Athletics Carnival was held earlier this term and was a great success with most students engaging in a range of track and field events.
We were lucky enough to be outdoors in great conditions, as well as seeing all staff members support our students.
It was wonderful to hear the positive feedback from students that they all enjoyed themselves, we are very much looking forward to our next whole school sporting event!
At the end of the day, our results revealed specific students who excelled in their event, so they were able to progress to the division round.
The division round included eighty students between Year 7 and 12.
All students competed to such a high standard and students were praised for their behaviour and professionalism on the day from other staff members and schools.
Our staff are incredibly proud of each student and congratulate the students who are advancing to the regional round.
Special mention to Tristan T in Year 12 who placed first in each of his five events, 110m Hurdles, 400m, 4 x 100m Relay, High Jump and Long Jump.
