Welcome to edition 2 of Term 2

This week has seen our Leading Teachers analysing CAT and SAC data and working on the revised Homework Policy.

If you have any feedback on homework we would be happy to consider it as we amend the existing policy.

We have also introduced a Year 10 Progression policy that will be introduced to our Year 10s in the coming days.

The purpose of these policies is to ensure that students have a clear understanding of the expectations of the College and of their commitment to their own learning.

Look out for these on Compass Newsfeed in coming days.

 Assessments coming up include:

8c Science CAT 2 due on the 20th May

Year 9s have a Romeo and Juliet Cat due at the end of May

And Year 12 English students will be completing SAC 2c Protest Writing

Please check your child’s Compass portal for details of these assessment tasks.

Finally , it feels like winter has arrived this week and with this it seems timely to remind our community of our uniform expectations.

By far the majority of our community wear our uniform with pride, however I have noticed a growing number of track pants being worn.

Just a reminder, school branded track pants are not a school uniform item to be worn outside of PE/Academy.

Non-school uniform track pants should not be worn at all.

If I could ask for your support in ensuring your child is in correct uniform when they leave the house in the morning, our staff would appreciate your support.

Have a wonderful weekend

Library News : Festival of Stories

The Festival of Stories kicked off on Wednesday May 1st with visiting author Katya de Becerra. Katya spent lunch time in the library chatting to a group of students who took the opportunity to pick the brain of a published author about her writing journey. Then the Year 9 cohort held a combined Connect class in the library to hear Katya present a creative writing workshop.

Other activities held in the library have been embraced by our students – everything from making their own book marks, voting on a Choose Your Own Adventure story, hunting for clues for the scavenger hunt, and voting on entries in the Student Parliament writing competition.

Especially popular has been the musical performances held on Fridays, including the new cafe choir – open to anyone regardless of singing ability.

Next week, on Monday May 13th, the Festival of Stories will finish with another author visit, this time from award winning author Will Kostakis. Will be presenting to the Year 8 cohort during Period 3 and then chatting to anyone who would like to attend at a Lunch Time in the Library event.

Sporting News

With most of our senior sport events coming to an end, FHC wanted to congratulate all senior students on their high levels of engagement and efforts to represent the school to a high standard.

We have already had a great range of senior students participating in netball, basketball, soccer, table tennis, AFL, and badminton this term.

It is so great to see all students enjoying themselves, learning in a different environment and receiving positive feedback from staff members.

Despite our healthy competition, unfortunately our girls’ and boys’ netball teams, and boys’ soccer fell short in the grand final, as well as our table tennis and badminton teams finishing outside of the podium places, however we are very pleased to see our boys’ basketball and AFL progress to the next round as the recently won their division!

It is always a pleasure going out on sport with students and we are looking forward to the rest of term with more sports teams ready to compete!

Year 9 & 10 Biology

In Biology this week the Year 9 and 10 students looked at Modelling the natural greenhouse effect by measuring the temperature changes for our a controlled experiments and putting it under artificial lighting.

Students were also able to identify types of errors within an experiment and how to make improvements to deepen their understanding of the evaluating and analysing of results as part of the science inquiry skills required for VCE science.
