Welcome to edition 1 of Term 3

Welcome to term 3.

After a successful start to Week 1, we held our VCE information evening for those students moving into Year 11 in 2025.

Invited to that evening were those students moving into Year 10 who have met the requirements for an Early VCE Access pathway.

To qualify for this privilege students were required to have a GPA of 3, a CAT average of 80 and an attendance rate of 90%.

Congratulations to those 25 students who met the requirements with flying colours.

These students have demonstrated exemplary learning and study habits in Year 9, Well done!

We are looking forward to a busy term with all course counselling taking place and the commencement of planning for 2025.

Key events this term include:

  • College Athletics – rescheduled to Wednesday August 21st,
  • Appreciation Week -planned by Parliament this week promises to be filled with fun events
  • Student Free Day on August 16th.
  • Primary school visits
  • College Production 12th/13th September

The Later Years team have been looking closely at student data this week and looking at what makes an excellent student.

Using a formula developed by our maths team we are able to fairly accurately predict a student’s study score in a particular subject.

Using this data has allowed us to have meaningful conversations with our young people regarding their future outcomes and pathways.

This week we are talking to our Year 11s ready for course counselling over the next few days.

With Term 3 comes an added level of intensity for our Year 12 students.

With a total of 10 weeks teaching time left in their school year, it is more important than ever that we support our young people to achieve their very best moving towards the exams.

As a parent please encourage your students not to take on any additional load at the moment, to ease off on shifts in their part time job and to consider how best to rest and recuperate whilst still maintaining a good level of study.

We know what our students are capable of, sometimes though, it can be hard for them to remember as exams come closer and final SACs are completed and graded.

The final hurdle is in sight so let’s encourage them to do their very best in these final few weeks.

Just a reminder hat the College Production Legally Blonde – the Musical will be held this term so look out for tickets on sale soon!

Have a great week

VCE Vocational Major activities – NGV and Melbourne Museum excursion and Garden Bed planting

This term kicked off with a busy start for our VCE Vocational Major students.

The Year 12s attended the National Gallery of Victoria for their Literacy class, exploring the My Country exhibition, which pairs emerging First Nations artists with an industry mentor.

Students then travelled to the Melbourne Museum for the TAC: Road to Zero Exhibition, to investigate road safety for their Numeracy class.

Here, they explored the impact of car crashes on the body, examined the safety features of vehicles and roads, and tested their reaction time at different speeds using VR headsets in the Physics challenge.

The year 11s have been working hard across term 2 to prepare the garden bed outside A block for planting, and have now planted a new batch of veggies in the garden.

The wonderful Marie from Vermont South Bunnings visited to teach students the basics of gardening and kindly donated seasonals including lettuce, spinach, parsley and a lime tree.

This was a great experience the students and they’re looking forward to continuing to care for and harvest the garden as we move into spring.

Basketball Marathon

On the last few days of term 2 we had our annual Basketball Marathon.
Forest Hill College’s Basketball Marathon has run since 1973 in honour of Geoff Davis, a beloved sports teacher who passed in the early 70’s from Leukemia.
The event, in total, has raised enough money to fully fit out an entire apartment for families of children with Leukemia from past efforts.
This year, students dressed up as iconic groups and duos and it was great to see everyone participating.
Students continued the marathon after school until 118 students from later years took over for the night.
We were lucky enough to have the combined effort of Mrs York, Ms Froliech, and student parliament to set up decorations.
We were generously gifted 3 pairs of life-sized cutouts of iconic duos from a very generous parent Iwan Jusuf.
In total we raised over five and a half thousand dollars.
Thank you to all the teachers who facilitated the event and for the fundraising effort for the students!
