Weekly Wrap

Week 1 – Term 2

Firstly I’d like to thank the community for the warm welcome I have received as I have moved in to the Principal role in Dave Rogers’s absence while he takes some well-deserved personal leave across Term 2. I’d also like to thank staff members who have stepped up to new positions as a result; Russell Lee as Assistant Principal, Ash Gell as Head of Middle Years sub-school and Jessica Hendrickson as Year 10 Level Leader.

Whilst this week has been a relatively short working week with Easter Monday and Anzac Day, it has been a very busy one. We have had our own Anzac Day service here at Forest Hill College on Wednesday morning, attended by Lieutenant Buckingham RAN, followed by our Student Parliamentarians participating in Box Hill’s RSL commemorative service at the Centotaph in Box Hill Gardens.

We are very proud of our continued partnership with local community groups and are grateful for the experiences this affords our students to connect with the local community.

Today our teachers are undertaking professional development in the area of ‘Developing a Positive Classroom Culture’. This professional development led by our two Heads of Sub-school, Russell Lee and Jesse Blowers is the culmination of the work teachers undertook during Term 1 to identify contemporary classroom management techniques, share best practice and ensure all teachers are using Positive Education language and structures in their teaching.

We are also taking the opportunity to ensure staff have completed mandatory Anaphylaxis training. The training consists of two parts. Part A is an online tutorial and Part B is a practical component. We have been using today to ensure as many staff as possible have completed the practical component.

Across the break 3 staff members were lucky enough to attend the PESA (Positive Education) conference and I’d like to thank Sam Smith, Kate Wilkinson and Nicole Mauna for giving up their time over the holidays to attend. They have each returned to school buzzing with ideas as to what we can implement in our school. We look forward to seeing some of these initiatives over the coming weeks and months. The first of which is the Mindfulness in May initiative during which staff members will commit to ten minutes of mindfulness each day for the month of May. Feel free to contact Sam Smith for more details of this worthwhile cause.

Week 2 looks just as busy with excursions to Top Designs, and the Year 10 VCE Expo, rehearsals for this year’s production – Rock of Ages, not to mention the Year 12 English analytical response SAC that takes place on Wednesday afternoon. Please contact the school if you have any questions about these events.
